Bristol City Council

Health & Social Care

Development of a new home support service

for people with dementia

and their families

Bristol City Council's Health and Social Care are ceasing
their own established 'Continuing To Care' (home care) service and, in its
place, developing a new community based specialist Dementia service. The
service will start in the Springtime of 2012.

It has the following aims:

  • To help people with dementia to remain living at
    home longer
  • To enable people with dementia and their families
and carers to feel supported at home
  • To avoid premature admission to either hospital
or long term residential care where instead, people with dementia could better be
    supported at home
  • To ensure that people with dementia are able to
live more independently for longer, and are supported by the service's skills
and knowledge, and any equipment or adaptations needed
  • To promote the building of greater confidence
  • To promote greater social inclusion for people
    with dementia and their families
  • To reduce some of the stigma faced by people
    with dementia and their families

We want this new service to be successful and particularly
want to do our best to meet the needs of different cultural groups in the city,
many of which do not have English as a first language.

There will be a meeting on Monday 6th February from 1.00pm
to 3.00pm at Dhek Bhal where we want to learn from you about your community and
dementia. Please do come if you have anything that will help us in the design
of this new service. We will provide an Urdu interpreter for the meeting.

We want to know :

  • What the
issues are for your community with regards to dementia?
  • What would
help or hinder your use of services for older people with dementia?
  • What
cultural factors do we need to take into consideration?
  • What do we
need to understand about the use of services by people for whom English is
    not their first language?
  • What do we
need to understand about your community that could help the service to make
    useful wider connections?
