All 39 carers who came to the event enjoyed themselves and participated in all the activities organised by Dhek Bhal. This was a joint event for South Gloucestershire and Bristol carers, funded by both the councils.
Health checks, massages, acupuncture, henna, jewellery making and gentle exercise were offered.
The carers expecially enjoyed the pampering workshops to enable them to release their tensions in the muscles and learnt new relaxation techniques from the tutors to help de-stress.
The day had an effective impact on the health and well being of carers as so often they tend to focus on the welfare of the cared for that they neglect their own health and emotional well being. This event further revitalised the carers to carry on with their everyday role of caring for their love ones.
Other organisations were invited to hold information stalls at the event and the carers used this opportunity to engaged with and find out about other services and useful information that they sometimes miss out on.
The collaborative work with the organisations have further been developed and we will be exploring ways of working together to help carers to easily access services and to make professionals better aware of the needs of the diverse south Asian carers that we support.
The event attracted 5 new hidden carers to attend, new friendships were forged, and carers overcame their isolation and shared their caring situation with other carers to gain mutual support. They also became aware of our services and requested future advocacy support from Dhek Bhal as they were disadvanged by language barriers.
The event was an overall success and all the carers who attended expressed how happy they felt as the event gave carers a long day break and respite from their caring duties. Because it was a joint event with Bristol, it offered all carers the opportunity to meet, socialise, have lunch together and taking part in shared learning activities and most important of all, supporting and networking with each other. Carers welcome events like this and would like to have a similar event next year, funding permitting.
